Drywall finish levels explained
The finish level defines work before decoration; it is not a general quality score.

Levels 0 through 5
| Level | Planning use |
|---|---|
| 0 | No taping or finishing; temporary or undecided work. |
| 1 | Basic joint treatment where appearance is not the goal. |
| 2 | Limited finish for certain concealed or substrate applications. |
| 3 | Prepared for heavy texture where specified. |
| 4 | Common painted-interior planning level under appropriate finishes. |
| 5 | Skim-coated surface for critical lighting or demanding decoration. |
Final specifications must follow the current project documents and product requirements. Strong side lighting and glossy finishes reveal more surface variation and can justify additional work.
What changes drywall cost
- Panel type, thickness and layers
- Wall height, ceilings and lifts
- Number of corners and small rooms
- Demolition and disposal
- Required finish level and drying cycles
- Primer, texture and painting exclusions
Write the finish into the quote
Ask bidders to state panel type, fastening, finish level, texture, primer, sanding containment and painting scope. “Finish ready” is too vague for reliable comparison.
