Paint coverage, primer and number of coats

The label coverage rate is a starting point; surface condition and color determine the real project.

Measure each surface

Calculate wall, ceiling, door and trim quantities separately because they often use different products and application methods. Subtract large openings only when the saved area exceeds the cutting and touch-up work around them.

Why coverage changes

Porous repairs, new drywall, rough texture and dramatic color changes can reduce practical coverage. Spraying creates different masking and overspray considerations than rolling. Manufacturer coverage is product-specific, so use the selected label rather than one universal number.

Preparation is part of the price

  • Move or protect furnishings
  • Clean dirt, grease and mildew appropriately
  • Patch, sand and remove dust
  • Caulk specified gaps
  • Prime bare, repaired, stained or incompatible surfaces
  • Allow required drying and recoat time

Sherwin-Williams advises that a prepared surface should be clean, sound and dry and recommends testing compatibility in an inconspicuous area.

Compare painting quotes

Require each quote to state preparation, primer, product line, sheen, number of coats, included ceilings and trim, repairs, protection and cleanup. “Two coats” should not substitute for a written product and surface specification.
