Wood vs. composite decking

Compare the entire deck system and years of ownership—not board price alone.

Reviewed August 2026 · HomeCostPilot Editorial Team

Upfront scope

Surface boards are only one part of the total. Footings, framing, ledger attachment, flashing, fasteners, fascia, stairs and guards can represent a large share of either deck. Composite products may require product-specific joist spacing, fastening and ventilation details.

Wood planning considerations

Species and grade affect appearance, price and durability. Plan for cleaning and any recommended sealing, staining or painting. Individual boards can vary naturally, and fastener choice matters for corrosion and staining.

Composite planning considerations

Composite lines differ in color, surface temperature, traction, scratch resistance, expansion behavior and warranty. Trex states that its products require cleaning but not the sanding, staining or painting associated with wood; that is a manufacturer claim for its own products, not every composite brand.
